Selling Ease of Web Development

easy dev 1 Everybody wants to get a site up, everybody wants some web presence, whether for their business, a possible business, or just as an outlet to their interests, be it tropical fish, chess, or needlework. But few people are very technical. Further, many people want a website but can't (or won't) pay much for it. Everybody who gets a website going says the same thing - 'its easy - nothing to it', which has an element of truth. We all learned word processing and some spreadsheet skills, now we're all learning something about html. So why not facilitate that as a means to make profit?
That market has sprung up to meet the need. When viewing eBay for 'Websites for sale', the results show, not real websites, but templates - some of which have been constructed in a matter of minutes and put up for viewing. Many sites exist that simply sell the ease of web development, templates for every type of website. The eBay sites for sale are not intended to be templates, but they are, and if viewed that way are a reasonable source of ease of web development. Further, any search for 'web templates' results in many sites that economically sell templates to download that mean anyone (almost) can get a site up using these easy to use templates - they're almost ready to upload to a web server.

Using this Market for Profit
easy dev 2 Create a template in your favored web tool (dreamweaver, frontpage, etc...), make it highly appropriate to a particular subject area and type, make it outstanding in design and display and sell the template through a web site or through eBay. The template needs to be very good for it's genre. It needs to be aproppriate for its type - no point having a law template that is orange and has dancing beans in the sidebar. Avoid the crowded subject areas covered by many (see next section). Aim for two markets - the regular developer and the beginner. This site author is a seasoned developer but a template may only cost $30 or so. This can save much development time and provide a different layout than our own template types. $30 represents an hours work - templates easily save this amount and more. As with many market opportunities, success may simply depend on looking at existing sites and seeing how a difference can be effected. Existing vendors all have a similar look and feel and are mostly a 'turn-off'. Decide on some fresh appealing site to sell, or a non-sales-pitch eBay advert, and market your template(s).

Tips
easy dev 3 Take another look at eBay - search for 'websites for sale'? What kind of sites (templates parading as sites) are for sale. A few categories spring to mind - lingerie, adult, dating, dieting, jewellry, auction sites. Having identified these, steer away from them. The arena is clogged. But much business can be had in more inventive areas. Avoid the stereotyped site templates.
Everyone is fed up with the 'just-give-me-your-money' sites that scream at you as soon as you load them. These are sites with smiling corporate type people with no reference to the site subject. They have many 'Special Offer' stickers on every page. Don't follow this trend - think of genuine sites that people would be grateful for a template for. Make them excellent and fit for purpose. There's a business in it.
