Website Advertising
Types of Web Ads
When the internet was still in it's infancy (many argue it still is), web banners as adverts quickly became ubiquitous. Then they started flashing.
Now they pop up or pop under the current screen. Studies about the effect of these upon site visitors abound, one of which suggests that much
of web advertising in it's present form is a total waste of money. This study included a demonstration - the authors gave tasks to people to find something
on the web and watched to see how they would do it. Certain sites had to be visited, but they could do what they wanted after that site. The searchers
did what most of us would do - got to a search engine and searched for the target request. Because the request was very specific, some significant
searching had to be done. The amazing fact arising was that all the time there were banner ads, some flashing some not which promised to
lead the searchers to the exact thing they wanted. All the people involved in the searching phased the ads out of their mind - not even looking at
them. It was as if they weren't there at all - worse, they are an annoyance that distracts but which we accept as a cost of the web. However, many businesses disagree. They wish to purchase ads - so a potential revenue for the web designer is to sell advertisements on their sites. There are, of course, other types of ads that are effective, and banner ads are still effective in some ways. Types of ads vary between banner, pop-up/under ads, flashing ads, text ads, pictures, implicit ads (words in the text of the page), glyphs and other variations. Brokers exist for placement of all these types of ads. The Simple Pre-Conditions for Success
To be attractive to advertisers, the simple fact is that there has to be significant traffic to the site. Any website that has less than 1000 hits
per day is unlikely to be a candidate for adverts. Unless there is a recognizable name, like Bank of America or Apple Computer, two factors generally
affect a websites trafic. PageRank, and Search Engine Optimization. If the result is good traffic, ads are a possibility. The higher the PageRank the
more attractive the site is for ads. Ads are similar to links, they can be sold on a monthly basis. The price is normally higher since they consume a
good proportion of the screen real-estate and usually need to be on the front page. Selling links may be
more lucrative because of being able to place more per site. A mixture of the two may also be effective.
Finding Paying Advertisers
Look for broker websites that deal with placing ads. There are many. A search phrase such as 'sell ads' will itself yield a number of sites that
will be happy to discuss customers. But your site needs traffic and needs to be able to demonstrate that to be able to attract ads from external sources.
