Profit by Developing Websites for Businesses
The Fast Expanding Web
Google, as of Sept 2004, is trawling through 4 billion web pages. It doesn't seem many months ago that the total was 2 billion. This represents
growth on a truly large scale. And it represents opportunities on a large scale too. In the pre-market crash starting in March 2000, website
development was the very thing that venture capitalists were throwing money at. MarchFirst burned through several hundred $$million before filing
for bankruptcy, Zefer was similar - $200 million. RazorFish $100 million, and the list goes on. Web development seemed an overspun game. However now (2004) more domains
have been registered, more sites have gone live than in the height of the pre 2000 boom. More than ever, every company recognizes the need to be online
and many many individuals are interested in web opportunities and expressing their interests online. All of this represents ethical opportunities
for profit. Website developers are needed. However, people quickly found that it wasn't too difficult to throw up a website, and so there are many amateur sites that are mostly functional and not particularly professional. They also rarely get deeply into any requirement for technological skill. As the web becomes more and more an essential part of our lives, the discipline and skill of superior website development is needed. Profitable Development
Offer to build websites for people. There are many companies that do this very economically - if you are a good developer, this is a good and growing
area - but it's tough to break in and win customers without a portfolio. The first one or two could be either free or heavily discounted. Make them great
sites and let their word of mouth work for you. Research five stores in your local mall that don't have sites, get some ideas for sites, imagine what would
excite them, and go along to try to get their business. If they are unduly hesitant, your offer of a site for $$nothing may well pay dividends in the long
run - and the owners will be happy to pay for enhancements along the way if they are confident in you. Many people say that they will never do anything
for nothing - but to break into this market may require something like that. But it doesn't take long to put up a website, a couple of days work may be
all that's needed to get the ball rolling. Make the job great - they'll retain you for their work when they want enhancements and spread the word to
other businesses.
Specialization
If you specialize in some area of web development - like core coding in perl, php or .net, you could look for opportunities that focus on this area.
Most website development is basic and the major skill involved isn't writing it, rather its designing the site, branding, art, etc. The difficult coding
to interrogate and set up databases is often outside the skillset of the company where the company is small. Here, then is an opportunity to exploit.
But the major skill in modern website developoment is not the coding either. The most sought after skill is the same as with the former need to
produce company brochures, before the net was here. Designing the look and feel and the artistry of the site. Further, managing web projects is highly
sought after by companies. If you are good in these areas, you can easily get a good job in the industry, or be freelance, or even better, establish a
company doing this very thing - really, a marketing company.
